Tough questions...

Answers from Michael Ramsden

You might think that being a Christian is about having all the answers. Well, unfortunately it’s not. Following Jesus is a journey, and it’s one where we’re always learning, growing and understanding more.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t know some stuff! This summer at our UK Soul Survivor events we invited our good friend Michael Ramsden (a clever lecturer and theologian) to host a few seminars that were simply geared to answering your questions about God, Jesus and faith. We’ve transcribed a few of the simpler questions and answers here for you to have a read of!

Question one:

Where do all the different races and skin colours come from, surely Adam & Eve were of just one race?

Michael's response...

The first question in there is what race were Adam & Eve, it's very unlikey they were white...

There has recently been a massive Human Genome Project which looked to trace our ancestry to different continents. What they actually found was that there is no such thing as race. If you go back in time you find that we’re all descended from either one woman or just a small group of women who lived in Africa. That means the chances are Eve was black (although we’re not entirely sure).

What is even more interesting is that scientists were surprised to find genetic variation in every human being is much less than we thought it was. We are over 99% the same as each other – so less than a one percent variation which accounts for our different eye shape, colour of hair and nose shape etc.  The rest of our genetic make up is the same.

On this same topic, people often ask ‘who did the first human beings marry?’ We understand that genetically it’s not a good idea for brothers and sisters to marry but if there was just a small group, how else did the population grow? And how did it not all go horribly wrong?

There is a command in the Bible not to interbreed and this comes just before the population hit seven generations. This is because for the first six generations it was possible for brothers and sisters to marry and have children without difficulties. After the seventh generation there would have been problems which is why we don’t allow interbreeding today.

Question two:

If God is always the same, why is he so different in the Old and New Testament?

Michael's response...

He’s not different! He’s the same! Let’s have a quick look at one of oldest books in the Bible, Jonah, as an example.

Jonah was told to go to Nineva to tell them to repent but Jonah really hated the people who lived there. Really hated them. He would have been happy if they died a slow and painful death so when God told Jonah to go and tell them to repent or he would destroy them, Jonah went the other way. He went in the opposite direction because he wanted God to destroy them.

After he’s swallowed by a sea creature then vomited up on the beach, he decides he will go to Nineva and reluctantly tells the people they have 40 days to repent.

And they do – every man, woman and child – they are all saved.  When we see people saved we think it’s fantastic – we clap, we cheer – it makes us feel great. If I went to a city and every person became a Christian I would be so happy. I would tell that story every where I went.  But Jonah is angry. Furious. He said:

O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live." (Jonah 4v2-3).

Jonah was so angry they’d been saved, he wanted to die.

So Jonah’s complaint is that the God of the Old Testament is too kind. If you read the Old Testament you read God doesn’t shrink back from the requirements of judgement and justice but he is a God who is gracious and compassionate.

If you read the New Testament you’ll read about a God who doesn’t relent on the issues of judgement and justice but is gracious and compassionate. So he really is the same God in the Old and New Testaments!
