Remember, remember the 5th of November. Why? Because it makes a good rhyme. Or because we really want to think about Guy Fawkes. Is it just me or is it a bit weird that every year we celebrate that over 400 years ago someone tried to blow up Parliament and failed? I love a good firework as much as the next person but the events of 1605 don’t seem like the most important thing for us to think about every year.
Anyway, that aside, the idea of remembering good things is actually a pretty helpful one. In the Bible one of the Psalmists says:
'I will remember the deeds of the LORD;
yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
I will meditate on all your works
and consider all your mighty deeds.'
Psalm 77 v11-12
The interesting thing is, before saying this the Psalmist had been doing some pretty serious questioning. Will the Lord reject forever? (v7) Has his unfailing love vanished for good? (v8) Is he too angry to show compassion? (v9) Whatever was happening for the Psalmist he was going through a pretty tough time.
Can you relate to that? Have there been times recently where you’ve wondered where God is and whether he’s the kind and loving God you thought he was?
If so, take a note from the Psalmist’s book. He’s honest enough to ask the questions of God but he doesn’t stay in that place of pain and give-in to disillusionment.
Instead he remembers the things God has done in the past. He starts focusing on the things he knows of God to be true from the works of his hands previously. And suddenly the tone of Psalm changes. The painful questions are replaced with exultations and praises. ‘What god is so great as our God?’ (v13) ‘You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.’ (v14). It sounds like his faith levels have taken a pretty dramatic rise!
Whenever we’re feeling a bit confused or down about what’s going on, it’s a good idea to spend some time focusing back on God, who he is and what he is capable of. That’s just one of the reasons the Bible is so brilliant! We can read about God’s miracles from long ago to increase our faith and be inspired by the way God parted the Red Sea so Moses and the Israelites could escape; kept Daniel safe in the Lion’s Den; resolved Joseph’s nightmare situation and gave us all salvation through Jesus. What amazing stories to increase our faith and remind us just who God is!
Most of us also have personal stories of how God has met with us and shown us himself and it’s good to focus on these things too. Maybe this summer God spoke to you in a powerful way, if so make sure it’s written down so you can remember his words in the future.
There may also have been times when you felt so convinced of God’s love for you and again it’s a good idea to record how you felt so you can draw on that when you’re feeling less close to God.
Circumstances in our lives may change but God is constant; he is ALWAYS the same. Malachi 3v6 says, “I the Lord do not change” and Hebrews 13 v8 says ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.’ And we know that no matter what is going on God is always there (he promises never to leave us in Deuteronomy 31v6) and he always loves us.
The Bible makes a point of telling us that God’s ways aren’t our ways (Isaiah 55 v8) which I think is probably because when we view our lives through our human eyes we sometimes conclude that God has abandoned us and isn’t bothered about what we’re going through.
The reality is that even when we don’t get what’s going on, God is always with us and he can always bring something good out of even the most painful situation if we let him (‘We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him’ Romans 8v28)
So anytime you’re feeling a bit unsure of where God is and whether he loves you, ‘remember, remember’ not the 5th of November but the things God’s done in the past, the ways he’s blessed you and how much he showed you his love through Jesus and watch your faith levels soar!
