When I was at school I decided that it wasn’t a great idea to tell my mates that I was a Christian. I thought that no one would like me if they found out about that part of who I was. It was a bit of me that I was insecure about and did not want to share.
We can all be like this at times, we can all feel insecure and often it’s because we are trying to work out who we really are. We can be so desperate for guidance that we’ll even take quizzes in magazines or on Facebook to see what famous film or book character we’re most like. (I’ll admit I did a ‘Lord of the Rings’ one and found out that, sadly, I am Arwen and not Gandalf as I’d always hoped.)
So how can we feel secure? How do we find out who we are? After all, the journey of self discovery is actually one of the greatest ways we grow in life. There’s a real power in understanding who you are and how you relate to the world around you. But how should our journeys of self-discovery be different as people that know and follow Jesus?
In Romans 12:2-3 Paul says this: …be transformed by the renewing of your mind… For by the grace given me I say to every one of you; do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has given you.
Paul is firstly speaking to our pride and reminding us to remain humble but he is also saying there’s something about faith, something about what God does to us that changes the way we think. We can all get into negative patterns of thought that start to dictate our lives, but God renew our minds, enabling us to shift away from those negative thoughts and live in freedom.
Sometimes instead of looking to God we can look to other people, hoping they will build us up and affirm us to make us feel better. I always find it interesting the way God deals with Moses when he was having a bout of insecurity.
We read in Exodus how Moses was called by God to lead his people out of slavery and into freedom. Moses responded by saying:
“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Ex 3:11)
Now if I was God in this situation I’d think “He’s feeling a bit low, maybe I’ll build him up a bit and say - ‘Hey Moses, you can do it! You’re really good at shepherding sheep and all sorts. You’re the man!’” But instead, this is God’s response: I’ll be with you.
That is all that God said Moses needed to know. Not where his gifts lay. Not an in-depth analysis of his strengths and weaknesses. Just the simple fact that God was with him. Clearly that wasn’t enough for Moses though as he went on to say "’Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.’
The LORD said to Him ‘Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.’" Again as Moses lays out his own flaws, God responds by outlining his own character.
Moses had to let go of who he saw himself to be and accept what God had asked him to do. For all of us in this journey of self-discovery, we need to remember the most important thing is finding out who God says we are. It’s through his Word and his promises that we find who we are; here are just a few:
We are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus. Romans 8v37
We are made in the image of God.
Genesis 1v27
We are inseparable from the love of God
Romans 8v38-39
We are called to good works and to a pathway that has been prepared for us.
Ephesians 2v10
We have to make a choice to take these things on board, believe them and be changed by their truths. We mustn’t let our insecurities overcome us but overcome our insecurities with the truth of who we are in God. Let’s allow him to renew our minds so we begin to think God’s thoughts about ourselves, and believe that we are who God says we are. Like Moses, we can overcome any identity crisis by knowing that God is with us and God is for us.
