Hungry
for God?

By Daniel Hoogetlyling

A while ago I was going to go on a walk through the park behind our house to pray and spend some time with God. I really wanted to be with God.

But on my way to the park I saw a little snackbar and all of sudden my desire to spend time with God was replaced by a desire to eat. So I went inside and had some good dutch fries.

When I was finished I felt satisfied and was ready for a good walk - I thought.

But as I was walking, I noticed that somehow I lost my desire to spend time with God somewhere between my house and the park.

David was a man whose greatest passion was God himself. In Acts 13:22 it says that he was a man after God's own heart. He wanted to know God and was hungry for His presence:

"O God, You are my God;
I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for You;
my whole body longs for You,
in this parched and weary land where there is no water
"
Psalm 63v1

A W Tozer once said "God waits to be wanted", and when I think of that I want to offer God a continually hungry heart. I want to be thankful but never satisfied. Always running hard after Him. Because I need Him.

So often there are so many things that steal my hunger for God. Somewhere in us all there is a longing for God. But our flesh is hungry too. And it is never satisfied. And the more we feed it, the more it can take away our hunger for God. We are so very comfortable, we have so much food, we have so much luxury, that we often loose sight of our need for God. Because if our flesh feels good and satisfied all the time it is hard to seek God because it costs us: it is not always comfortable and it does not always feel good to seek God. In the process of growing closer towards God, we die. We loose ourselves but gain God.

Yes, everything else is worthless compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have discarded everything else, counting all as garbage, so that I may have Christ and become one with Him (Phil. 3:8-9).

The closer we come to God the more garbage we begin to see and the more we have to get rid of.

God does not want to live without us. Somehow we attract the heart of God in a very powerful way. He is passionate about us. He loves us. It is like in the book of Song of Songs: "I am overcome by one glance of your eyes." It was not for nothing that God sent His son to earth. God was after us and He would do anything for us and anything so that He could be one with us. Jesus opened the door for us to start our walk to the heart of God - let's run towards him for the rest of our lives.
