Another article about HIV and AIDS? Haven’t we been here already? What’s the point of going over all this old ground?
Let me tell you a story. It’s about Gloria. See her picture? Isn’t she great? Check out that grin – she’s got to be a bit cheeky, don’t you think?
Gloria is thirteen. Five years ago both her parents died of AIDS-related illnesses. Five years before that, when she was just three, Gloria was diagnosed HIV positive.
At Tearfund we don’t like making statements that are all dramatic. But there’s no other way to put this; Gloria’s life has been devastated by HIV.
She’s not alone. In her village of Fombe, Malawi there are many, many others whose lives have been destroyed by HIV and AIDS. Eight years ago – somewhere between her diagnosis and her becoming another of the 13 million children orphaned by AIDS in Africa – Gloria lived in a village that was on its knees, brought low by too much suffering and too little support.
But then Eagles, Tearfund’s partner in the area, stepped in. Thanks to the support of churches in the UK and Ireland, we were able to support Eagles as they in turn helped to mobilise the church to transform the village. They have helped people to grow crops that survive the changing climate, dug wells that provide fresh water and helped build clean toilets that prevent disease.
And the church in the village – now ten times the size that it was back then – has taken the lead in accepting and supporting people living with HIV. People just like Gloria.
Now living with her 79-year-old grandma, Gloria gets help from her aunty Agnes, who takes her to hospital and makes sure she is taking the right medicines. The church supports both Agnes and Gloria, giving money, practical advice and spiritual support.
Like I said, she is not alone.
Do you ever wonder how God feels about HIV and AIDS? Maybe that word ‘feels’ is a bit misleading. How do you think Christ would have responded to a disease that robbed people of their dignity and threatened to take away all hope? What, as those little wristbands remind us, would Jesus do?
It’s not all that hard to guess, is it? Surely he’d grieve like he did with Lazarus. Surely he’d command his church to act, just like he did with his disciples. And surely it can’t be hard to image him telling anyone within earshot that love must guide our actions?
So what should we do about HIV and AIDS today? How about we start by following the lead; we grieve, we act, we love?
Tearfund wants you to join with us in responding to stories like Gloria’s by praying. And acting – by joining our campaign to call on world leaders to make essential treatment universally available for all who need it. And telling others about Gloria’s story, encouraging them to act as well.
Like I said, Gloria is not alone. You can be there with her too, joining with the church worldwide as we keep on talking about HIV and AIDS.
Craig is a lovely chap who lives in Reading. He's a writer, think and all round creative tinker! He has a lovely family and back in the annuls of time used to work for Soul Survivor (in fact he was the one who invented the idea of a Soul Survivor Magazine... so you owe him a lot... well, we do).
