'What's around the corner?'

By Natalie de Laune

I love going to the cinema. Not only because I get to eat popcorn - the best snack ever - but also because I like a good story. If you were in the cinema with me though, you might not think I’m a fan of films because  I spend a lot of time with my scarf over my eyes and my hands over my ears. I get scared pretty easily. And when I say ‘scared’ I mean I get uncomfortable when I can’t work out what’s going to happen.

After I saw the first Lord of the Rings film with my family, my mum wanted to ask for a refund for my ticket, because I’d spent two thirds of the film hiding under my coat, humming so that I couldn’t see or hear what was happening. There was just too much suspense so I never watched the next two films!

I like to know in advance who the villains and heroes are, who will live and who will die, who will fall in love and who will get their heart broken. Watching a football match is my idea of torture: 90 minutes of suspense, not knowing who will score, who will be sent off and knowing that any moment my team could go from winning to losing?! No thanks! I read the BBC match report after the game - it’s much less stressful!

I might be a bit extreme, but I think we all like to know what’s around the corner. A few months ago I was on a busy train and noticed a lady opposite me reading a big pile of leaflets about palm reading, astrology and psychics. She was obviously pretty keen to find out about her future, and I remember watching her and saying to God ‘Maybe you could give me a word of knowledge (something that only she and God would know about) and I could pass it on to her and explain that Jesus knows her intimately and is in control of her present and future life?!’

I immediately then said to God ‘…but please DON’T do that, because that would be embarrassing! This is a busy train and I could get the word wrong or she’d laugh at me and I’d make a fool of myself!!’ So I put my head down and carried on reading my book. Ironically the book I was reading was John Wesley’s ‘The Holy Spirit and Power’. I was more interested in reading about the Holy Spirit than stepping out and seeing his power in action.

I have a drink bottle that’s covered with quotes. Last week one of the quotes kept jumping to my attention: ‘Do one thing a day that scares you.’ I can’t even think of one thing I did last week that scared me. I prefer to play it safe - to do things I know I can do well, things I can control in some way and know the outcome in advance.

But talking about taking risks isn’t enough! My pastor once said to me, “Sometimes God doesn’t just call us to crawl TO the edge: he calls us to jump OFF the edge.” So often fear of failure, fear of looking silly and fear of being in a vulnerable position where we can’t predict the outcome of the risk we take holds us back from the exciting things God wants to give us.

The Bible says something interesting about fear. It tells us that “perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18). When we have a revelation of God’s perfect love for us and a deeper understanding of his promise to never abandon us in the hard times, in the confusing times and in the times when we are taking risks for him we can look at our fears in a new light.

If you were at any of the Soul Survivor conferences last summer, or if you’ve listened to the 2009 Live Album you might have heard a song called ‘Hosanna’. It includes the lyrics ‘When we see you we find strength to face the day. In your presence all our fears are washed away’.  I want to keep pursuing a closer relationship to Jesus so that the more I know him, the more I don’t mind taking risks for him because my knowledge of Jesus’ love washes away my fears.

Rather than worrying about how things could go wrong, I want to instead worry about what I’ll miss out on if I don’t take risks and live a life on – and off - the edge for Jesus! I don’t want to just hear and read about the Holy Spirit – I want to step out and see the power of the Holy Spirit in action! I long to be less self-conscious and more Spirit-conscious!

So next week my friend and I are going to step off the edge. We’re going to go to our local shopping centre and ask God to give us words of knowledge and encouragement for people. That might be the easy bit. The scary bit will be going up to people and passing on the words, and maybe praying for them if they want us to. I can’t predict what will happen. We might not get it quite right. The people we talk to might think we’re crazy and tell us to get lost. I might want to hide behind my scarf and run away.

BUT it also might go really well. We might be able to pass on God’s love to someone in a way that makes them think about God differently and shows them that he cares about them and wants to be involved in their life. So I’m going to risk looking silly and being unable to predict how things will work out. If I don’t take the risk, I’ll never know!

And since I’m trying to overcome my fear of being unable to predict how things will work out, maybe now is also the time to endure nine hours of suspense while watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy and finally discover what happens to Frodo and the ring! I promise I’ll even turn off my iPhone so I can’t cheat and look up the ending in advance...
