Calling your calling

By Gemma Foster

What am I supposed to do with my life?  What is my calling? Ever thought about that or asked God these questions? Or frankly is thinking about what to do at the weekend a big enough decision, let alone the rest of our lives?!

From when we were small children; aunts, uncles and nice ladies in the queue at department stores would ask us ‘what do you want to do when you grow up?’ If you are anything like me you will have listed a number of different things through the years, from teacher, to nurse, to actor to accountant (well ok, maybe not accountant!) The thing is often, the closer we get to ‘growing up’, the more confusing this question becomes.  Then we read in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians:

I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received’ (Eph 4v1)

So no pressure there then! But how are we supposed to do that if we don’t know what we have been called to?

When I think about calling I often find it helpful to split it into two categories – general and specific. By ‘general’ I mean things we are all called to do. In Micah 6 the answer to the question of ‘what does God require of us?’ [or call us to] is to act justly and love mercy and walk humbly with God.

But what does that mean? Basically to put flesh on the stuff written about in the Bible; to help fight injustice, to love others, show mercy (compassion) to people, to live day by day with God and to share our faith with others. This might mean sticking up for someone who is being bullied, signing a petition against unfair practices and seeking God as we listen to the latest Soul Survivor live album.

But what about specific calling? More often than not, as we walk in our general calling, we will find that we are getting passionate about a particular thing. Or we find ourselves doing something which we seem to be quite good at. Or you might find that you can’t stop doing something – you have probably seen this in others; worship leaders as they play Whoooooa on their guitar for 30 times in one evening when you are trying to watch X Factor! Or evangelists who will not shut up about the lost! When we find ourselves doing these things, they can often be clues about what we are called to.

Over the years I have come to see my specific calling is in evangelism – although I was one of the last people to spot it! I have always invited friends to Christian events and nothing gets me more excited than the church getting out there and sharing their faith. Eventually I kept finding myself serving at different outreach things. But it wasn’t until I heard a talk about evangelism where the speaker described how we could spot an evangelist that I thought ‘hang on a minute the person he is describing sounds just like me!’

So I said this to my mates (although not altogether seriously) and they said ‘Gemma it’s obvious you are called to evangelism!’ Obvious?! Really?! Well it wasn’t obvious to me! Something I learnt that day was it is good to chat to people around you and ask them what they see in you. (Although a word of caution: choose someone wise like your youth leader, not everyone’s advice will be helpful!)

So you might be wondering how do we know that it’s not just our ‘good idea’ and is actually something God has called us to? When God created us He made us with specific gifts and things he had created for us to do, so we should not be surprised when we are called to something we are good at and enjoy. God does not work like the job centre, where He waits until we become a Christian and checks out where the vacancies are and asks us to do that. Instead he creates us to be good at certain things and be passionate about certain things – and, if we allow him, He can use these for His Kingdom.

That’s not to say that doing what God has called us to is always easy. We might feel God has called us to be a church leader or Bible teacher – but that does not mean we are born understanding everything about the Bible.  Instead we need to read and study the Bible more so we have something to pass on to others!

You might have an idea of what God is specifically calling you to do, so what then?

Firstly, you need to keep on with the ‘general calling’ stuff. Knowing what God has called us to specifically is not like a promotion where we stop doing what we were doing before.  We always need to be living out what we see in the Bible and doing the things that Jesus did. If God has called you to be a worship leader you still need to show compassion to people around you and care for those in need. This is about investing is our relationship with God which is the most important thing, otherwise we won’t get too far with the other stuff.

Secondly, talk it through with someone and ask them to pray with you.

Thirdly, do some research. If you feel called to be a missionary in Latin America – try and speak to someone who has been involved with mission or contact a mission agency and ask them about it. If you feel called to be a nurse try and talk to someone who is a nurse.

Finally, don’t stress. This is a lifelong journey of God revealing more about what he is calling us to so you don’t need to have it all sorted before we’re 18!

As we serve God in the everyday He will let us know more specific things as we need to – we don’t need to worry that we might ‘miss it.’ He created the universe and he will tell us our role in it when we need to know – until that point there are plenty of things the Bible tells us we can be getting on with!
